At First Light

Detailsx
A stunning album by two of the finest traditional musicians around. Manchester’s own Mike McGoldrick, flautist, whistler and piper extra-ordinaire, along with Ireland’s John McSherry. John is an outstanding musician, held up by many as Ireland’s finest piper – this CD also features John on Low Whistle.

The guest list is impressive and includes Paul McSherry on guitar with Dezi Donnelly and Aidan O’Rourke on fiddle.

There is some quality whistle playing from both John & Mike which makes this album a must for lovers of the whistle, pipes or flute. All tracks are traditional arranged by McGoldrick/McSherry.

Flook CD. Haven (new)

Detailsx
BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2006 Best Group WINNERS!!
Another outstanding album!! Review from The Living Tradition:
This album has been released to coincide with Flook's tenth anniversary tour, and it bears all the hallmarks of a band who are remarkably at one with themselves. The interplay of the core band members is both intricate and powerful, and the extra frisson of the guest musicians is gobsmackingly good.
With Sarah Allen's flutes and accordion, Ed Boyd's guitar and bouzouki, Brian Finnegan's flutes and whistles and John Joe Kelly's bodhran and mandolin, you would expect fireworks, and when Ewen Vernal, Seckou Keita, Leon Hunt, Padraig Rynne, Catriona McKay, Andy Davies and Mark Tucker add their various contributions, the whole package just soars to unbelievable heights. The whole performance is a masterclass in interaction between instruments which allows all to have their place, so that whilst the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, all of the parts are still easily discernable.
The level of technical excellence is well-matched by the sheer enjoyment that comes across of musicians having a great time and not really noticing that they can play the fingers off all comers. The exuberant fire and drive of the up-tempo tracks is offset by the hauntingly lyrical finishing On One Beautiful Day to emphasise the depth of musicianship.
This is quality of the highest type.

Honest Water. Fraser Fifield

Detailsx
An inspirational piece of work by Royal Scottish Academy of Music Graduate, Fraser Fifield. Scottish fusion at its best presented brilliantly by this young multi-instrumentalist – Saxophonist, Piper & Low Whistler.

Fraser has played/plays with Wolfstone, Old Blind Dogs and the awesome Salsa Celtica.

Basically – he’s really good!

“his diverse influences and writing skills provide a broad canvas – a one man Moving Hearts” Inverness Courier.

Lovers of the pipes and low whistle will be amazed by this distinctive brand of mellow jazz flavoured Celtic music. Lots of other influences kick in too, Balkan, Gallic (of course!), Bulgarian and more. There are plenty of funky traditional come contemporary grooves too.

Great technique and imagination is evident throughout this masterpiece.

Musical Jouney. Cormac Breatnach.

Detailsx
This is an outstanding album featuring the work of one of Ireland’s finest whistlers, Cormac Breatnach.

A brilliantly produced album in every way. Cormac’s playing is very close to the tradition but he has an inherent contemporary vitality to his playing.

A precise and creative musician. An album that takes some beating!

Tracks are played on Overton Low F & D whistles, Susato High C & O’Briain Low D. Classy accompaniments on guitar, bass, harp, bouzouki, violin, keyboards and more.

There are 11 tracks, giving Cormac’s playing a real showcase, Polkas, Jigs, Reels and more worldy material are all served up in an original way.

I have played this album on my radio show The Drift, on BBC Radio Lancashire (www.bbc.co.uk/lancashire Thursday 20.05 & Sunday 21.05 – listen on line) and it has received a strong response from listeners.

Rubai. Flook. CD. (new)

Detailsx
The combined four-piece line up of Flook includes Whistles, Flutes, Bodhran, Accordion and Guitar. To say they were brilliant would be almost an under statement.

This Album released by Flook in 2002 has received more critical acclaim than any Flute or Whistle album Mr. Wetyer can ever remember. It was voted into the top 15 world roots fRoots Critics Poll 2002. It also reached Number One in Irish Music Magazine’s Dublin Charts in October 2002.

The material on the album chiefly consists of tunes written by Sarah Allen and Brain Finnegan. This Album is beautifully paced and played. Brilliant timing, technical perfection and awesome musical creativity are some superlatives you could use to describe this album. Buying this CD is the next best thing to seeing Flook live.

One top Whistling Muso from Dumfrieshire, Paul Garner, describes ‘Rubai’ as the best flute album ever.
