This is a very comprehensive book for the beginner, novice and intermediate whistle player and is almost unrivalled in that respect. It is also a handy companion for someone wishing to know about the fundamentals of traditional Irish Music.

The book starts with the initial approaches to the instrument – step by step. There is a wealth of guidance, examples and exercises, mapping out a route to genuine competence as a whistle player of traditional Irish Music. The journey includes very thorough instruction in Irish decoration techniques known as cuts, strikes and slides, long rolls, bread rolls (sorry feeling hungry!) and short rolls.

There is an historical section to the book providing valuable background into the development of the instrument and the position of the whistle within the Irish tradition.

The content is split into four sections. 1) history, development. holding, fingering, sounds. 2) ornamentation. 3) tonguing, phrasing and breathing. 4) muscle memory and practice.

There are excerpts from traditional tunes and recordings of tunes too.
